Few commonly used words and phrases are adieu, rendezvous, au revoir, bon appetite and so on. Now, just imagine how bizarre it would be if someone pronounces “rendezvous” just as it is spelled in English. It would probably cause quite a lot of confusion, even to an English speaker, because we are used to this phrase being used. So you can see, learning the correct pronunciation is a very important aspect of studying a language for a beginner.

In French, the consonants at the end of the words are usually not pronounced. There are exceptions to this rule too. Consonants that are pronounced at the end of a word are c, f, r and i. The main difference between English and French pronunciation of consonants is that in French, the consonants need not be stretched.They need to “break” and then the vowels are pronounced more prominently.

In the beginning, speaking French for beginners might be quite tough. To make it easier, it’s important to start with a checklist of the things you want to learn first. If it is for holiday abroad, you can learn a few dishes, greetings, way to ask common questions and so on. A less formal option you have is salut (sah-lew). This might be used between friends and people you are more comfortable with and would be similar to ‘Hi’ in English.

Another, perhaps less common option to say hello in French, is coucou (koo-koo). You will hear this less often but, again this is a very informal way of saying hello, and is fairly popular as an opening in emails, for example.

That is all you really need to know to say hello in French, and these will probably be the most common phrases you use if you are learning to speak French.

How do you say goodbye in French?

Again, you have more formal and informal options available to you.

Au revoir ((oh-rv-wahr) is the most commonly use phrase to say goodbye. You could also say salut (sah-lew), the same as hello, if you being informal.

To say goodnight you would use bonne nuit (buhn-wee).
